Walking up to the entrance, we are greeted by an unforgettable Audio-Animatronic Mr. Potato Head acting as the barker for this fun, action packed attraction. More time was spent programming Mr. Potato Head and he says more lines of dialogue than any other Audio-Animatronics figure ever created by Walt Disney Imagineering. Also, He is the first Audio-Animatronics figure that is able to remove a body part and re-attach it (be sure to watch his ear). Mr. Potato Head has new, highly expressive and animated eyes that can look directly at a particular guest in the queue when speaking to her or him and his mouth appears to form words and vowel sounds, both firsts for Walt Disney Imagineering.
Officially opened on June 17, 2008, "Toy Story Midway Mania" features games that audiences of all ages and skill levels can enjoy. The attraction will immerse guests into the "Toy Story" world as never before. Donning our 3-D glasses, we shrink to the size of a toy, and hop into fanciful ride vehicles that travel and twist along a colorful midway-themed route. Upon arriving at each game booth, we will aim for animated targets to rack up points using our special on-board "toy cannon".
It's a high-energy, immersive adventure that puts us right in the action as our game play triggers fun surprises that provide a fourth dimension of fun. In the timeless tradition of Disney storytelling, Toy Story Mania! takes its inspiration from the fact that Andy’s toys spring to life whenever he is away. Soon after Andy got a "Midway Games Play Set" for his latest birthday, the toys jumped at their first chance to open the box and set up the game booths and carnival trams so everyone could ride and play. That means "no assembly required" for us, the toy's game-playing guests – just nonstop fun.
"Toy Story Midway Mania" is one of the most technologically sophisticated attractions yet developed by Walt Disney Imagineering, costing an estimated $80 million to design and build. It features more than 150 PCs, which includes one HP Windows XP PC for each of Midway Mania's 56 game screens, as well as others that control the special effects at each game.
This new attraction has quickly become one of my favorites at the Disneyland Resort. It has just about everything I look for. There's action, interactivity, friendly competition, a high level of re-rideablity (if that's a word) and it's just plain fun. No matter how many times guests return to ride and play, they can be sure every ride-through will seem different.
